Between The Cracks: Soap Scum at Black Sheep Cafe (Wednesday)
Once again, Faingold at Large proudly presents "Between the Cracks" - the recurring feature designed to shine a light onto Springfield-area bands, and all in their own words, to boot. Join us, won't you? There's gold between them thar cracks!
Today's BTC flashlight shines on charmingly monikered native Springfield rockers Soap Scum.
Personnel: Mario Soap – lead guitar; Brian Soap – vocals, rhythm guitar, and occasionally saxophone; Cory Soap – bass; Kevin Scum – drums and backing vocals
What's in a name, particularly yours? Soap Scum is that stubborn creamy glaze that coats your shower walls and tub. It’s extremely hard to clean because it’s made up of different things like mildew, mineral deposits, hard water, soap talc and body oils. There are several techniques for getting rid of this multifarious sludge, but prevention is key.
When did you form? Members of Soap Scum all come from a long history of Springfield hard rock bands including The Winkie Brothers, The Danger Mouths, Intricate Collapse, and Johnny & The Tyrants. The band formed when a few members were fresh out of college, most with some type of music-related degree (music education and music business). All of our previous bands had come to an end of some sort and we found each other at the end of the same broken path. We all decided to start a band that would bring some excitement to the town- something that would really make the kids dance again! We set out writing songs that stuck to our hard rock roots but have ventured out into reggae, blues, and jazz.
Releases/discography/download links: So far we have released one demo cassette called “Swimming in Suds.” We have recently begun recording tracks for a new album to be released sometime in late 2013 or 2014. The album is going to be a split album with another rock band from Champaign called “The Howling Wolves.”
How do you pay the bills? Playing original hard rock tunes in Springfield isn’t always easy in helping pay the bills. We have fixed cars on the side, worked as baristas, and have hospital jobs.
What other artists have had the biggest impact on you? We like to go by the 3 big S’s. Sabbath, The Stones, and Santana. Of course there’s also the obvious Led Zepplin, Primus, Limp Bizkit, Van Halen, and Devo.
Finish this sentence: If we didn't have to worry about money, we'd… buy a plane and tour the entire state. Unlimited money also means unlimited beer!
Upcoming live appearances: Wednesday, August 21st, 7:00 PM, Black Sheep Café(1320 South 11th Street) withCross Me, Wolf Luv, IAMIAM, and Gazeebo; Friday, September 13th, 8 PM, Black Sheep Café with Bad Side, Ruz, and Mother Leopard
