In just about two hours, Springfield poet Anita Stienstra will take on the role of  “Poet in the Parlor” at the Vachel Lindsay Home (603 S. 5th St). Stienstra will be presenting a 45 minute program, which will include readings from her own work as well as Vachel Lindsay’s poetry. "I think I’m going to bring my guitar," she says.  "I’ve set some of Vachel Lindsay’s poetry to music, so I will be playing that little ditty.". Guests will be availed of a variety of tasty snacks as well as a tour of the grounds of the historic residence.

“It's going to be a really informal, quaint little gathering – just an hour out of your Saturday," Stienstra says. “I've never done one of these before and I’m so glad to be doing it. I plan on playing it by ear depending on the feel of the audience." One of the original poems that may or may not be on the list takes as its subject Catherine, mother of the great Springfield poet. “I was there planting tulips one spring," recalls Stienstra regarding the poem's inspiration, "and I was imagining her inside the home watching me.”

Poet in the Parlor begins at 2 PM.
