Next to godliness

Peter Sellars, renowned opera, theater and film director whose opera Hercules opened in Chicago to rave reviews, speaks to the Dominican Institute for the Arts, a group of artists from the United States, England, Argentina and South Africa, whose annual meeting is in Springfield this year. The DIA invites you to join them for two illuminating presentations by Sellars and an art gala. July 7, Sellars talks about the role of the arts in today’s society. The next day, July 28 from 9 a.m. to noon, he offers a different presentation that includes a question and answer session. Sellars is also professor of World Arts and Culture at UCLA. Read online interviews at PBS and in the New York Times where in a 2008 article he said, “Art is about re-energizing spirituality in a secular context.” The public is also invited to the DIA’s Art Gala July 29 at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart-Gifffin High School on Washington Street. The gala opens with a concert by six accomplished musicians from around the U.S. and features DIA members’ art and a silent auction. A $5 donation will be accepted for the concert.
