Giving back

Here’s something you can do to show your support for veterans this year on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Fifth Street Renaissance is holding a collection at the construction site of their new shelter. The 16-bed facility will offer transitional, independent living for homeless and disabled veterans. The center needs items that anyone would need to furnish a house and run a household. Suggestions for gently used or new items include: twin sheets, blankets and mattress pads; dishes, glassware, silverware, utensils and cookware; bedside tables, casual chairs, televisions, alarm clocks; towels and washcloths; socks, personal care items; exercise equipment and weights; dressers, dining table, chairs and folding chairs; cleaning, paper and yard supplies; small kitchen appliances; 15 refrigerators, 3-5 cubit feet in size and more. Volunteers will be on hand to assist unloading, and sandwiches and donation receipts are available. Cash donations are welcome. Fifth Street Renaissance offers transitional housing for the homeless, a food pantry, programs for those with HIV and AIDS, a transitional youth program and various other programs for those in need. The expected opening date of the new facility is the spring of 2012.
