Editor’s note 3/31/16

Inside this week’s edition is our Capital City JOBS supplement, dedicated to all the Springfield-area unemployed and under-employed residents who still believe in the American dream, and to the businesses who have the courage to hire some of them. Job hunters will find useful articles like “Networking for people who hate networking,” and “Getting into state and SIU jobs,” along with notice of the April 7 Greater Springfield Job and Career Fair, where about 40 local businesses will be looking for potential hires. As Patrick Yeagle reports in this week’s news section (see “The politics of unemployment,” p. 10), Illinois has steadily gained jobs in recent years, though the unemployment rate remains above the national average. While the Rauner administration focuses on any bad economic news it can find as an argument for its non-budget “reforms,” the real threat to the Illinois economy is the government stalemate imposed by those who say they want to save it. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
