Editor's note 8/25/16

It looks like Tammy Duckworth is going to be our next U.S. senator, so we’d better start getting to know her. Sen. Mark Kirk’s ads against Duckworth are so shrill as to be unconvincing. Nobody believes Duckworth, the military veteran, is blind to national security concerns, but we don’t really know what she’s like or what she stands for. She promises a series of policy speeches, the first of which – on trade and economic policy – was delivered in Chicago this week. On trade agreements she wants to protect American jobs, but opening up Cuba to Illinois ag exports is good. She wants to see a “manufacturing renaissance in Illinois” supported by workforce education programs. She supports wind energy, biofuels and helping the coal industry with carbon capture and storage. She favors increased federal investment in infrastructure projects. So far her ideas are neither new nor remarkable, but at least she’s thinking beyond campaigning to governing. And while we’re trying to get acquainted, it would be nice to have her come visit central Illinois more often. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
