Editor's note 3/29/18

It’s hard for me to even find time to worry about Stormy Daniels with all the protest I’m getting from the puzzle people. What a determined group they are, pulling out all the stops in an effort to reverse our decision to put the puzzle online only starting in April in order to save on newsprint. Some are militant, threatening to demonstrate outside our office and one even threatening to subscribe to the SJ-R if we don’t relent. I don’t have much sympathy for a few who say the puzzles are the only reason they pick up IT, but another said working the crossword was how he rewarded himself for reading the entire cover story on Jeanne Ives. One young woman said she plans to use the puzzle to teach her son not only to write, but to use his brain. One who called himself an “old fart” said he has enjoyed many conversations at our advertisers’ establishments when he’s been asked how to work the Sudoku. How, he asked, can we deny him “a little fun and frivolity while enjoying your tactile local weekly paper.” The pressure mounts. Will the power of the puzzle people prevail?  –Fletcher Farrar, editor and CEO Add New
