ABE IN EVERY COURTHOUSE
A digital reproduction of Alexander Hesler’s famous Abraham Lincoln portrait was unveiled in the first floor lobby of the Sangamon County Courthouse this week. Of the original portrait, taken on June 3, 1860, Lincoln reportedly said, “That looks better and expresses me better than any I have ever seen; if it pleases people I am satisfied.” The new reproduction was donated to the county by Dr. & Mrs. Peter Doris. The dedication is part of a statewide effort by the Illinois State Historical Society, in conjunction with the Illinois Bicentennial, to place the Hesler portrait in all 102 county courthouses in Illinois. Each portrait is dedicated in the honor of a former Illinois statewide official, with the Sangamon County portrait dedicated in honor of former Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan, who was in attendance at the unveiling.
