Tour on-road bicycle facilities
Celebrate Springfield’s achievement of bronze status as a “Bicycle Friendly Community.” This casual-paced, one-hour tour of some of Springfield’s on-road bicycle facilities starts and ends at Cafe Moxo during the downtown farmers market. This designation by the League of American Bicyclists recognizes the many ways in which city and local organizations have worked during the past 10 years to improve conditions for bicycling in the community. Springfield now joins 450 other communities across the United States that have achieved BFC status. It hopes to attain a higher BFC status over time by making further investments in bike facilities, educational programs and promotional events. The Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Council and Springfield Bicycle Club spearheaded the City’s BFC application, with support from the Office of Public Works. The BFC designation will be celebrated with a mayor’s proclamation, a group bike ride from the farmers market on June 23 and a community bicycle festival on Sept. 8. University of Illinois Springfield, Illinois Department of Revenue, Maldaner’s Restaurant and Springfield YMCA have also received bicycle-friendly recognition from the League.
