Editor's note 8/9/18

Now, before the silly season starts, is the time to get acquainted with political candidates and their stands on the issues of their campaigns. In this week’s cover story on the 13th District congressional race between incumbent Rodney Davis and challenger Betsy Dirksen Londrigan, writer David Blanchette asked each candidate to outline their campaign without referring to their opponent. So here is a refreshingly polite presentation of the candidates and the issues. Which is not to say the rest is not important. How much of a factor will Trump play? Will Londrigan attract the kind of money she needs to mount a serious challenge? Will negative ads be a factor? Does anybody care? All these unknowns will play a role this fall in what could be an exciting political campaign. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
