Barrence Whitfield and the Savages

Just when you thought it was safe to go out to bars and quietly listen to contemplative acoustic sounds, along comes Barrence Whitfield and the Savages to knock your socks off and stick them in your ears. Barrence Whitfield and the Savages, who, back in the mid-80s, launched out of Boston as the darlings of garage punk-soul, are back and just released their fourth 21st century record titled Soul Flowers of Titan (you try drinking coffee and listening to Sun Ra for weeks on end while blowing your mind out with funky, raunchy soul-grooves fronted by a delightful madman bent on making every move a party of universal proportions and see what you name your record). Blessed by Little Steven’s Underground Garage while backed by Bloodshot Records, Barrence along with Peter Greenberg (original Savage on guitar) and Phil Lenker (bass), plus Andy Jody (drums) and Tom Quartulli (sax) make up this “quazy” quintet that will quash and quiet the qualms of life, if only for as long as you experience their quintessential performance of quite beautiful monstrous mayhem.
