CONGRATULATIONS!

When last we heard of Springfield police officer Paul Carpenter, the city was paying $24,000 to neighbors who sued after the officer, while on duty, pulled over a woman who lived down the street whom he suspected of flipping off his son, or being related to someone who did. He dropped a flurry of f-bombs, overheard by dispatchers when the woman called 911 while Carpenter screamed during the 2012 incident, when the officer was a detective. After serving a two-day suspension, Carpenter six years later is a K-9 officer and, according to his peers and bosses, the epitome of an excellent cop, notwithstanding the fact that he was charged with official misconduct and wire fraud in 2005 (the charges were dismissed) and the city tried firing him in 2006 on the grounds that he’d violated several department rules while assigned to investigate homicides and other serious crimes – he won his appeal and was awarded nearly $200,000 in back pay. That was then, this is now, and so Chief Kenny Winslow recently handed Carpenter a pin and certificate of appreciation for being voted Officer Of The Quarter by supervisors and peers for the recently concluded summer months – it’s a new program designed to recognize hard work by the city’s finest. No word on whether Carpenter repeated the immortal words that the woman he pulled over said that he’d screamed while she dialed 911: “This is going to be an everyday occurrence. I’m going to fuck with you.”
