Editor's note 5/9/19

Legalizing recreational marijuana won’t make Illinois great. But the proposal is different from other recent addiction-for-profit schemes, like video gambling, the General Assembly likes to approve. Legalization will put an end to pot smoking being a criminal act, which has caused untold suffering for decades, and there are provisions for expunging minor marijuana offenses from criminal records. The debate over health detriments can take place outside the court system, where we discuss cheeseburgers, alcohol, cigarettes, motorcycles and other legal bad habits. It helps also that Gov. J.B. Pritzker is not just depending on sin taxes to balance his budget. There’s a proposal to increase revenue with a tax on income, a rare idea in Illinois. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and CEO
