Cotton candy and country music

The folks at the Sangamon County Fair are in high gear right now, getting ready to kick off the six-day gem that is one of the highlights of summer in these parts.  The fair crew does a great job of producing events and attractions that are the quintessence of classic Midwestern county fairs – livestock judging, pageants, carnival and midway temptations, demo derby, miles of exhibits and lots of food – then peppers them with top-notch grandstand shows.  The Barnes PRCA Rodeo, straight out of Peterson, Iowa, opens this year’s entertainment on Wednesday evening.  Some serious but friendly motorized competition follows on Thursday night with the truck and tractor pulls. The fair’s country music roots will start to show on Friday when local band Lick Creek steps out on stage with Easton Corbin.  Saturday evening will be filled with the strums, plucks and vocals of the Outlaws and Renegades featuring Travis Tritt, The Charlie Daniels Band and The Cadillac Three.  General gate admission is $10 for ages 5 and older and it includes all grounds acts and carnival rides.  Grandstand admission is an additional charge. sangcofair.com.
