ALPLM GOES BACK TO SCHOOL

School, everyone knows, has a reputation for not being fun, and after a summer of leisure, it’s easy to understand why kids might not be eager to go back indoors to learn about stuff like math and science and history. Enter the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, which is holding a free back-to-school event this Saturday aimed at priming kids from the first through eighth grades for another year in the classroom. Forget the internet. Kids at the event scheduled to run from 10 a.m. until noon will learn Morse code and send messages via a contraption called the telegraph. They’ll also design bridges and work on ironclad ships. There will be no formal recess, we’re told, but there will be a miniature golf course – Robert Lincoln, Abe’s eldest, after all, was known for loving golf in his later years.
