Connecting readers and Illinois writers

The Illinois Center for the Book

Starting in 1984, the Library of Congress’ Center for the Book began to establish affiliate centers in the 50 states. Today, there is a state Center for the Book in all 50 states. The Illinois Center for the Book is located in the Illinois State Library at Second and Capitol Streets.

The Center’s mission is to nurture and connect readers and writers and to honor Illinois’ rich literary heritage. The Center has been a leader in fostering literacy. Below are listed several of the Center’s ongoing programs.

Illinois Authors Wiki is a source for information on authors, photographers and illustrators who have published books and have lived in Illinois or written about Illinois. The Wiki is a continual work in progress and will only become stronger over time with the additions of the authors themselves and through the work of specialists who share an interest in Illinois’ literary heritage.

Illinois Emerging Writers Competition promotes creative writing, encourages local writers and provides a unique opportunity and outlet for recognizing new literary talent. Winners receive cash prizes and have their works submitted for review and possible publication in several Illinois literary magazines.

The Illinois Literary Heritage Award was established in 1995. The purpose of the award is to acknowledge extraordinary contributions to the literary heritage of Illinois over a significant period of time. Past winners include Studs Terkel and John Knoepfle.

Letters about Literature is a national reading and writing promotion for children and young adults sponsored by the Illinois Center for the Book in cooperation with the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress in partnership with Target.

Literary Landmarks endeavors to promote the rich literary heritage of Illinois, the Illinois Center for the Book has partnered with Friends of Libraries USA.
