DANCE, DANCE, DANCE
It’s not too early to start thinking about Christmas, when chestnuts roast and sleigh bells jingle and The Nutcracker becomes a mainstay throughout the land. But there can be no Nutcracker without dancers, and so the Springfield Ballet Company is looking for a few good kids to perform in its annual production of the Christmas classic. Auditions for boys who are 7 or older will start at 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, with a $5 audition fee required. Boys should wear black pants, a white T-shirt and either black ballet or black jazz shoes. Auditions for girls at least 9 years old will start at noon on that same day at the Hoogland, and the ballet company recommends that girls have at least one year of ballet training. The audition fee for girls is $20, which includes a ballet class. Girls who wish to land a part should put their hair in a tight bun and wear a black leotard with pink tights and pink ballet shoes. No parents will be permitted to observe auditions. There will be two performances – on Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 – but there will be plenty of practice during the weeks leading up to the big show. Rehearsals lasting one hour will be on weekends at the Hoogland. In the three days leading up to the performance, daily rehearsals will start at 5 p.m. For more information, call 544-1967.
