Get ready for commercials: Springfield mayoral hopeful Frank Edwards has received a big financial boost from organized labor and Republicans.
Edwards on Saturday reported receiving more than $31,000 in three donations, including $25,380 from the Sangamon County Republican Foundation, $5,000 from the South Central Illinois Laborers Political League and $1,000 from the Sangamon County Republican Central Committee. The money puts his campaign past the six-figure mark. Previously, Edwards had reported receiving less than $74,000 since launching his campaign, an amount that doesn’t include donations of less than $1,000 received since Jan. 1.
The cash comes less than three weeks before Election Day, and just in time to buy radio and television spots before the April 2 election. In an interview last week, Edwards told Illinois Times that radio and television commercials are coming.
The cash puts Edwards into the money-race lead. The latest campaign disclosure reports show that Mayor Jim Langfelder, who is seeking a second term, has raised slightly more than $90,000, not including amounts of less than $1,000 donated since Jan. 1.
