THEATER & COMEDY I Production brings Lincoln's favorite Shakespeare play to life
Abraham Lincoln once remarked, "I think nothing equals Macbeth." The nation's future 16th president cherished Shakespeare's play. So it seems fitting that it be brought to the stage at Theatre in the Park in the village where Lincoln once lived as a young man. The story of Macbeth is familiar. Three witches tell the Scottish general Macbeth that he will be king of Scotland. Encouraged by his ambitious wife, Macbeth kills the king (Duncan), becomes the new king and kills more people out of paranoia. The production, directed by Mark Buckholz, stars Kenny McNaughton as Macbeth and Maggie Teaman as Lady Macbeth. However, this show is not your ordinary production of Macbeth. Buckholz said it is "designed with a steampunk vibe for the outdoor stage. The costumes, accessorized with gizmos, gadgets and goggles, harken back to the London of Jack the Ripper. The broadsword combat in frock coats is reminiscent of the Creole duels of old New Orleans." The show maintains a Scottish flavor, Buckholz said. It includes bagpipe music by Tommy Ogilvy and the Celtic Dancers. The show is rated PG. Tickets are $18.
