Two hundred years ago, Illinois conducted the most consequential election in its history: to determine whether it became an unrestricted 'slave state'. The proslavery elements were strong, had a legislative majority, and felt confident. The opposition was organized, well-funded, and led by Governor Edward Coles, a newly arrived easterner. The violent, controversial campaign lasted 18 months.

Bernard Sieracki received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois-Chicago. After retiring as a lobbyist, he taught as an adjunct professor at UIC.
